Italy, Europe · Masseto (Tenuta Masseto, Frescobaldi family) · 100% Merlot
Italy's most famous Merlot, from one small clay hill near the sea. The 2018 is the graceful vintage: silk and perfume rather than muscle.
Delivered in ~30 minutes, anywhere in Monaco
Masseto comes from a single seven hectare hillside on the Tuscan coast, planted with Merlot on rare blue clay. Only around 30,000 bottles are made each year, and collectors compare it to the greatest names of Bordeaux. The 2018 was the first vintage made in Masseto's own new cellar, and critics praised it as unusually silky, perfumed and refined.
The sommelier’s note
«James Suckling and Antonio Galloni both gave the 2018 a rating of 98 points, calling it pure silk with balance and harmony. It is a quieter, more elegant Masseto than the blockbuster years, which makes it lovely at the table rather than only in the cellar. Give it an hour of air and a large glass; it repays patience with layers of dark fruit, violet and fine chocolate.»
From the first pour to the last glass — follow it through the evening.
On arrival
This is a young wine from a legendary vineyard, and it is a little shy at first. Pour it into a decanter or simply open the bottle and pour one small glass to let air in. Aim for about 17 degrees, cooler than the room.
30 min · After 30 minutes
Take a first proper sniff. You should find dark cherries, blackberries and something floral, like violets. If it still smells mostly of wood, be patient; the fruit is on its way.
60 min · After 1 hour
Now the wine shows why critics compared it to pure silk. The texture turns smooth and the flavours layer up: dark fruit, then chocolate, then a whisper of cedar. This is the perfect time to sit down to dinner.
120 min · After 2 hours
Save a glass for after the meal. Fully open, the wine turns softer and more perfumed, and you taste a hint of what it will become after years in a cellar. No cheese needed, just a quiet moment.
