Napa's Mondavi-Rothschild legend: velvet dark fruit, roses and cocoa. The 2017 is silkier and fresher than its bolder neighbours.
Delivered in ~30 minutes, anywhere in Monaco
Opus One was born when Robert Mondavi of Napa and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Bordeaux decided to make one great wine together. The 2017 tastes of ripe blackcurrant and black cherry with a whisper of cocoa, wrapped in a texture as smooth as satin. It is a big wine, yet it never feels heavy; think of a strong handshake in a cashmere glove.
The sommelier’s note
«The 2017 vintage was harvested just before the Napa fires, and it shows a fresher, more red-fruited face of Opus One than the powerhouse years around it. Give it an hour in a decanter and the floral side blooms beautifully. Wine Advocate rated it 95 points; it drinks wonderfully now and will keep for another decade or more.»
From the first pour to the last glass — follow it through the evening.
Open & decant
Pour the bottle into a decanter now. It arrives a little shy; air is the key that opens the door. Pour yourself a small taste to remember this starting point.
30 min · First glass
Blackcurrant and black cherry are now front and centre, with a satin feel on the tongue. Serve around 17 degrees; if the bottle feels warm, ten minutes in the fridge does no harm.
60 min · Full bloom
This is the wine at its most charming: floral notes bloom over the dark fruit and a hint of cocoa lingers on the finish. This is the moment to bring out the main course.
120 min · Last glass
The final pour is softer and earthier, with a whisper of forest floor. Save it for the cheese, or simply for conversation.

«A ribeye or filet gives the wine's velvet tannins something rich to hold onto, and both taste better for it.»

«Roast lamb with herbs echoes the wine's savoury side without stealing the show.»

«Venison's deep flavour matches the wine's intensity note for note.»

«Aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda melt into the wine's cocoa finish.»
«Grilled or roasted red meat softens the wine's structure and lets the dark fruit shine.»
«A veal chop or slow-roasted pork keeps things gentle, letting the wine's silkier 2017 character speak.»
«A rich meat ragù or mushroom risotto has the weight to stand beside this generous wine.»
